After arriving late on a Thursday night we stayed only three days in Perth altogether, an awfully short time. The reason for that was primarily wanting to go up north very soon, along the Coral Coast and to the Ningaloo Reef. Nevertheless, we visited the city center a couple of times. We went to the London Court, a famous shopping mall that looks like „Harry Potter World“, as well as to the Central Markets and to the Esplanade near the Swan River.

One of the outstanding features of Perth is definitely the Bell Swan Tower:

Its shape resembles a black swan, the heraldic animal of Western Australia. We found not only bronze statues of black swans along the Swan River directly in the heart of the city, but of course some live black swans as well.

We took some walks along the Esplanade and Kings Park:

All this time we stayed with Scotty, our couch surfing host in Perth. To be precise, we stayed at his house also known as Scottopia:

We watched „Black Books“ and „Flight of the Conchords“, drank too much beer and could not revive Scotty’s poor pet fish after it stayed in the cold for too long. A funny time – not for the fish, however! 🙂

Also we had to service the LandCruiser, an oil change among other tasks was due. Unfortunately the back tyres where completely worn now as well, they had already served us more than 28.000 kilometers. We went looking for some cheap tyres and luckily found a place where we could get it all done, including a general service, e.g. putting some grease into the grease hubs – it’s an old car after all! All this cost us a fortune – 500$, but there was no way around it.

After we had picked up the car it would occasionally stall completely, thus we went back to the mechanic the next day. Things got worse – when I tried to clean all the dirty parts around the carburator something flipped off. We were not even able to determine how to put it back into place! We could still drive, though, but without a working fuel accelerator pump. Great – the day before we were supposed to go up north something breaks… first thing in the following morning: go to a carburator specialist. Luckily they had a replacement part (a butterfly), inserted it immediately and we were good to go for another 50$. The old butterfly was actually so worn that it would have been a matter of time for it to break anyway – better fix it right now in Perth than in some remote area. 🙁

We also met with Sebastian to continue our travels up north together again. That’s pretty much all there is to say about our Perth experience – with our Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol forces combined we left Perth on May 2, 2011 and drove off into the „wild wild Western Australia“. 🙂
