Our story of Mackay is a really short one: we stayed only for a day. In the morning we strolled around the town and stopped here and there, e.g. at Lamberts Lookout at Slade Point or at Bluewater Quay next to the Pioneer River:
- Mackay beach from Lamberts Lookout
- The Pioneer river
- Cutie at Bluewater Quay, Mackay
- Impressions in Mackay
- Sculptures at Bluewater Quay
- Bluewater Quay at the Pioneer River
- Old Customs House, Mackay
- Funny frogs
- In the streets of Mackay
In the afternoon we signed up for a tour in a working sugar mill: the Mackay Working Sugar Mill. We learned all about the process of producing sugar from cane chalks, including its treatment at various stages, the use of byproducts and how to let these sweet crystals grow at last. A few tastings of molasses and sugar were included as well, of course:
- Sugar millers ready for their inspection shift
- Inside the Mackay Sugar Mill
- Sweet, thick, warm stream of tasty sugar molasses
- Raw sugar right from the production lane
- Someone got a bag of freshly produced raw sugar!
- Quality control: see the sugar crystals grow
